Thyroid Diet and
Weight Loss
There are several things a person can do to
help minimize the affects of thyroid disease and control the
condition itself. Obviously, it is important to live as healthy a
lifestyle as possible. This means maintaining a balanced diet
comprised of plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole
foods. A diet too high in processed foods and alcohol can reek
havoc on your skin and body. It is also important to consume
adequate amounts of water and fiber. Drink at
least 64 ounces
of water per day (the more you drink, the better). The
National Institute of Health recommends 21-38 grams of fiber each
day. Fiber is available in food, supplements, and powder form.
In
order to keep the body functioning correctly it is
necessary to exercise on a regular basis.
Exercise becomes even more vital if you have a thyroid disease.
Whether you choose walking, aerobics, weight training, or sports it
is absolutely essential to one's health. Remember in order to lose
weight you must burn more calories than you take in per day. A
good rule of thumb is to strength train 2-3 times per week.
Strength training involves muscle conditioning primarily with
weights. Then to engage in cardiovascular exercise 3-4 times per
week (in at least 30 minute increments). Experts agree that
the combination of strength and cardio training will burn calories
and boost metabolism.
In addition, it is helpful to
keep a journal. It only takes a few minutes a day to jot down
things like what you ate, what physical activities you did, and how
you felt overall. This can be a powerful tool in helping you to
manage your thyroid disease.
